The meaning that adults have in biology means an animal with the capacity to reproduce. When used with humans, the word adult can have meanings that are connected to social or legal ideas. Legal adults are those who attains the age of adulthood and is considered to be an independent, self-sufficient person and accountable. The word "major" can be applied to the person. The age at which a child can legally become an adult is 18, however, the definition of legal maturity can be different depending upon the nation or legal system as well as the psychological condition of the child.

Human development is the time in which full physical and mental maturation has been reached. Many people believe that the age of adulthood is attained when you are 20 or more. Following middle age (starting about 40 years old) is the time to reach older age (around the age of 60). In adulthood there are three distinct phases early adulthood (18-30 years) middle adulthood (30-60 year olds) and late adulthood (60%-60 60%). By the time we reach an early age (20 to early 40s), our physical maturation is complete, although our height and weight could increase a bit. In the early years of adulthood, we are physically and mentally at the peak. The strength of our muscles, the response timing, the ability to sense as well as cardiac function, all hit their highest levels.
